Train Your Puppy like a Pro: Beginner’s Obedience Guide you’ll actually Use

Puppy Training

There’s nothing quite like bringing home a new puppy. There’s also nothing quite like realizing your new roommate loves chewing, barking, and ignoring your every word.
Relax   that’s where puppy training swoops in to save your sanity (and your socks).

Whether you’ve got a tiny fluff-ball or a sturdy bundle of chaos, teaching basic obedience training early is the key to raising a happy, polite dog who doesn’t redecorate your house with tooth marks.

Why Basic Obedience Matters

Think of training as your puppy’s roadmap for life. Puppies don’t automatically know what “good dog” means  they learn by clear, patient teaching.

Solid obedience builds trust, stops bad habits from becoming full-blown disasters, and makes you and your pup a dream team.

Plus, let’s be real: it feels amazing when your puppy actually listens.

The Must-Know Basic Commands

Below are 5 essential commands every puppy should master  plus practical steps to get there without turning your living room into a boot camp.

1. Sit

“Sit” is Puppy Training 101. It’s the command that helps your pup stay calm instead of bouncing like a kangaroo.

How to teach it:

  1. Hold a treat close to your pup’s nose.
  2. Move it slowly upward your puppy’s bottom will naturally drop.
  3. The moment the butt hits the floor, say “Sit” and reward.
  4. Practice for a few minutes daily.

2. Stay

“Stay” is your best friend at the front door, in the yard, or when you just need your dog to hit pause.

How to teach it:

  1. Ask for a “Sit.”
  2. Open your palm in front of your puppy’s face and say “Stay.”
  3. Take one step back. If they hold position  treat jackpot!
  4. Increase distance slowly. Release with “OK!” so they know they’re done.

3. Come

A solid recall saves lives. If your puppy bolts toward the street, “Come!” should bring them right back.

How to teach it:

  1. Get down to their level and say “Come!” excitedly.
  2. Gently pull on the leash if needed.
  3. Reward BIG when they arrive  treats, praise, happy voice.
  4. Practice indoors first, then try a fenced area.

4. Leave It

Puppies are professional scavengers. Teaching “Leave It” can stop them from eating questionable sidewalk snacks.

How to teach it:

  1. Show a treat in your hand.
  2. Say “Leave it” and close your hand if they try to grab it.
  3. Wait  the moment they back off, reward with a better treat from the other hand.
  4. Practice daily.

5.  Down

“Down” helps calm an excited pup and teaches self-control.

How to teach it:

  1. Start with “Sit.”
  2. Hold a treat at your pup’s nose, then move it down to the floor between their paws.
  3. Slide it away slowly  your puppy should follow and lie down.
  4. Say “Down” and reward.

Pro Tips for Success

  • Keep it short: Puppies have the attention span of a goldfish. 5-10 minutes is plenty.
  • Be patient: Reward the good, ignore the oops.
  • Practice daily: Consistency beats marathon sessions.
  • Make it fun: Happy voice, play breaks, and plenty of belly rubs keep your pup excited to learn.

Connect the Dots

Basic obedience sets the stage for advanced training like tricks (check our upcoming Teach Your Dog Advanced Tricks guide!).
